Why All Christians Should Support Gay Marriage Legalization

Recently, gay marriage has been a hot topic of debate, as a majority of Americans, 53 percent according to CBS News, are in favor of its legalization.  However, as homosexual relationships become less of a taboo in America, the other 47 percent of Americans continues to oppose it, standing by the traditional values that they were raised with.  Christians continue to cite the Bible as a source, but while it is a significant book to others and myself, it holds no bearing in government operations and can be manipulated to go in favor of many unjust cases.

First and foremost, the Bible holds no legal bearing in the operations of our federal government.  Traditional Christians continue to argue that we are a Christian nation, but this is just not the case.  While many of the Founding Fathers were Christians, not all of them held homogenous Christian views.  Even for those that did, it was clear that they did not intend to mix their religion into the foundation of the new America, as the freedom of speech and religious practice in the First Amendment of the Constitution depicts.  America was founded as a country where any religion or culture can be freely practiced. 

Those that advocate against the legalization of gay marriage often quote Leviticus 18:22, which states, “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.”  However, the same religious book advocates the stoning of women committing adultery and many other things that have become legally unacceptable in our free, socially liberal society.  In addition, Matthew 7:1 states, “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.”  Therefore, when Christians judge homosexuals and advocate to lower their standard of living, they are going against the same religious text that they are citing.

A homosexual marriage in no way affects the welfare of any outside parties.  Therefore, the banning of it is not an objective law.  To remain a truly free country, we must ensure that only objective laws are created and that we do not have unjust laws that revoke the civil rights of Americans.  The banning of gay marriage is subjective.  This means that if one receives the opinions of a random group of people, it is highly unlikely that they will all believe the same thing; it is their opinions.  However, murder, rape, theft, and other crimes that affect other people are objective, therefore meaning that the effects are real.

Opponents of gay marriage worry that the legalization of it will destroy the “sanctity” of marriage itself.  However, if there truly ever was “sanctity” in marriage, it has been destroyed long ago.  Brittany Spears and many other stars have ruined the definition of marriage.  Kim Kardashian filed to divorce Kris Humphries 72 days after the day of their marriage. Half of first marriages end in divorce, showing just how unholy marriage has become in our society.  How can a lifetime marriage between two homosexual males or females be more destructive to the “sanctity” of marriage than Kim’s 72-day marriage?

Sticking with the traditions they were raised with, nearly half of Americans continue to advocate against the legalization of an issue that in no way affects their own welfare.  They continue to judge the actions of another person, calling them an abomination, even when the religious text they are quoting tells them not to judge one another.  A homosexual marriage will hold no negative effects on outside parties, and those against them can simply refrain from receiving one themselves.  If there truly ever was ”sanctity” in marriage, it was long destroyed before the legalization of homosexual marriage and remaining in the opposition of it will degrade our society more than the legalization of it ever could.
