Why All Christians Should Support Gay Marriage Legalization

Recently, gay marriage has been a hot topic of debate, as a majority of Americans, 53 percent according to CBS News, are in favor of its legalization.  However, as homosexual relationships become less of a taboo in America, the other 47 percent of Americans continues to oppose it, standing by the traditional values that they were raised with.  Christians continue to cite the Bible as a source, but while it is a significant book to others and myself, it holds no bearing in government operations and can be manipulated to go in favor of many unjust cases.

First and foremost, the Bible holds no legal bearing in the operations of our federal government.  Traditional Christians continue to argue that we are a Christian nation, but this is just not the case.  While many of the Founding Fathers were Christians, not all of them held homogenous Christian views.  Even for those that did, it was clear that they did not intend to mix their religion into the foundation of the new America, as the freedom of speech and religious practice in the First Amendment of the Constitution depicts.  America was founded as a country where any religion or culture can be freely practiced.

Those that advocate against the legalization of gay marriage often quote Leviticus 18:22, which states, “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.”  However, the same religious book advocates the stoning of women committing adultery and many other things that have become legally unacceptable in our free, socially liberal society.  In addition, Matthew 7:1 states, “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.”  Therefore, when Christians judge homosexuals and advocate to lower their standard of living, they are going against the same religious text that they are citing.

A homosexual marriage in no way affects the welfare of any outside parties.  Therefore, the banning of it is not an objective law.  To remain a truly free country, we must ensure that only objective laws are created and that we do not have unjust laws that revoke the civil rights of Americans.  The banning of gay marriage is subjective.  This means that if one receives the opinions of a random group of people, it is highly unlikely that they will all believe the same thing; it is their opinions.  However, murder, rape, theft, and other crimes that affect other people are objective, therefore meaning that the effects are real.

Opponents of gay marriage worry that the legalization of it will destroy the “sanctity” of marriage itself.  However, if there truly ever was “sanctity” in marriage, it has been destroyed long ago.  Brittany Spears and many other stars have ruined the definition of marriage.  Kim Kardashian filed to divorce Kris Humphries 72 days after the day of their marriage. Half of first marriages end in divorce, showing just how unholy marriage has become in our society.  How can a lifetime marriage between two homosexual males or females be more destructive to the “sanctity” of marriage than Kim’s 72-day marriage?

Sticking with the traditions they were raised with, nearly half of Americans continue to advocate against the legalization of an issue that in no way affects their own welfare.  They continue to judge the actions of another person, calling them an abomination, even when the religious text they are quoting tells them not to judge one another.  A homosexual marriage will hold no negative effects on outside parties, and those against them can simply refrain from receiving one themselves.  If there truly ever was ”sanctity” in marriage, it was long destroyed before the legalization of homosexual marriage and remaining in the opposition of it will degrade our society more than the legalization of it ever could.

  5. TO put it in short terms God gives us permission and even encourages us to Judge but only after we judge ourselves, before you go preaching words out of context make sure you look at the text as a whole first.

    1. I personally do not believe that this is the case. Firstly, the Bible can be interpreted in many different ways to support any cause, just or unjust. In my beliefs and as evident in Matthew 7:1, we are not supposed to judge those that carry out actions that do not affect the welfare of others. In addition, I would like to stress the fact that a government should NOT be run based on the Bible. This is how kings took control, through "divine power," how millions have been killed throughout history unjustly, and how people are suppressed. In addition, I would like to share some verses, concerning adultery, which prove that if our government ran actions directly from the Bible, we would live in an authoritarian society:

      Exodus 19:13
13 He shall surely be stoned or shot with arrows; not a hand is to be laid on him. Whether man or animal, he shall not be permitted to live.' Only when the ram's horn sounds a long blast may they go up to the mountain.

      Deuteronomy 13:10
10 Stone him to death, because he tried to turn you away from the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

      Deuteronomy 17:5
5 take the man or woman who has done this evil deed to your city gate and stone that person to death.

      Deuteronomy 22:21
21 she shall be brought to the door of her father's house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done a disgraceful thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father's house. You must purge the evil from among you.

If you can tell me that we should continue to stone people in today's society, then you can say that the government should be ran based on the Bible. However, I believe that a government should not enforce "morality." It is okay to be "morally" opposed to gay marriage and divorce; you can choose not to get one. Personally, I am morally opposed to gay marriage, and I would never even consider that lifestyle. However, I am much more opposed to the idea of an authoritarian society, in which Americans cannot even choose whom they can marry.

    2. When Jesus was put to death on the cross He took away the need to punish those for their sins. For they are still sins but the punishment is now reserved for God to decide. Don't you know your Gospel?

    3. I agree that the punishment is reserved for God to decide, but believe in the separation of religion and state. If you truly believe that gay marriage is blasphemous, then you also believe that it will be punished. I just do not believe that it is the government’s duty to do so.

  6. Heres the whole text of MAtthew 7:1-5

    Matthew 7
7 Judge not, that ye be not judged.

2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?

5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

  7. Isn't there a difference between judging and holding a person accountable for their sins? Also what do you think about the verses in Romans and 1 Corinthians? Also the Constitution was written by our founding fathers who were affected by many older documents such as the Bible in building a moral society. Therefore the Bible must effect our government in order for the United States not to end up like Sodom and Gammorah. Everyone in America needs to read the story of Sodom and Gammorah because, often times history does repeat itself. I agree our society does not hold and value marriage as previous generations did in the past, but this can be linked to our society moving away from God and His laws, as God does not aprove of divorce.

  8. "I agree that the punishment is reserved for God to decide, but believe in the separation of religion and state." A separation of religion of state even though the birth of America was founded on Judaeo-Christian values and the escape from tyranny built on the foundations of Christian moral codes.

Where does the line stop? If it is acceptable to "marry" someone of the same gender, what is keeping in check the future possible recognized right to marry a sibling, a parent, a minor, or an animal? If you shudder at this concept, why do we open this Pandora's Box of future possible outcomes? Keep marriage as a religious recognation, and allow the government to recognize a civil union.

    1. Have you even been to the website you linked to? It's disgusting and has nothing to do with gay relationships. Gay relationships are about mutual love and attraction, none of which appear anywhere on this website.

  10. What the -? Brandon, have you seen this blog? I think you should take a look at it...
Also, marriage is not a right according to the Constitution; therefore, gay people are not legally entitled to it, as it is not a right but a privilege. When gay people have proven that they deserve this privilege, they should be allowed to marry.
